History

Union City’s history stretches back to the indigenous Costanoan people who inhabited the area along Alameda and Dry Creeks for centuries. The first non-native settlers arrived in 1850. John and William Horner, inspired by their steamship “The Union,” established a settlement they named Union City. Shortly after, another community called New Haven, founded by Henry Smith, emerged nearby.

In 1854, Union City and New Haven merged to form the town of Alvarado, named after the former Mexican governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. Alvarado thrived as a local produce shipping hub, thanks to its location on Alameda Creek. It even held the title of Alameda County’s seat until 1856. However, the town’s fortunes dwindled, and by the mid-20th century, both Alvarado and its eastern neighbor Decoto faced potential annexation by surrounding cities. To preserve their independence, the communities chose unity. In 1959, they incorporated as a single entity, reviving the historical name Union City. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for the city, paving the way for its significant growth in the following decades.
