History

El Sobrante’s history stretches back thousands of years. Evidence suggests the Ohlone people, specifically the Huichin tribe, inhabited the El Sobrante Valley as early as 5000 BC.  Their presence is marked by a shell mound near San Pablo Creek, a testament to their long-standing presence in the region.

Spanish colonization significantly impacted the area in the late 18th century. In 1772, Spanish governor Pedro Fages granted Rancho El Sobrante, a massive 17,500-acre land parcel, to soldier Joaquin Moraga. The land changed hands throughout the 19th century, serving as a ranch and witnessing events like the California Gold Rush.  Later, in 1887, the arrival of the California and Nevada Railroad brought the name “Oak Grove” due to the lumber industry flourishing in the area.
